Introduction

Strategic issues in the global convenience retailing industry are no longer unique to local markets. Instead, similar issues, opportunities, and challenges exist at different times for convenience retailers across the globe. There is, in effect, an "issue lifecycle curve" within our global industry. From tobacco regulation and in-store self-checkout, to rapid payment systems, pay-at-the pump, many other issues and opportunities, each country may experience a different phase in the life cycle of an issue or opportunity.

We appreciate you taking the time to rate particular countries and regions in their current state on the Global Issues Lifecycle. When rating a country’s position on an issue’s lifecycle please use the following rating guidance:

  • 1 - 2: Infancy state (less than 10% adoption)
  • 3 – 4: Developing state (10% to 35% adoption)
  • 5 – 7: Active deployment state (35% to 75% adoption)
  • 8 – 10: Mature state (75% to 100% adoption)

In considering the lifecycle state in which a country is in you should take into account such things as:

  • Marketplace presence
  • Commerce integration
  • Government regulation/involvement
  • Media coverage
  • Social consciousness of the issue or opportunity
